Cloves come from the unopened flower buds of a tropical evergreen tree native to Indonesia and India. During the Middle Ages, cloves became popular across Europe to flavor and preserve foods as well as use medicinally. Ground cloves have an intensely spicy, sweet with smoky notes aroma and flavor. Clove powder enhances flavor in spice blends, BBQ rubs, vegetable pickles, curries, and holiday baked goods. Use sparingly due to its powerfully bold presence. It also pairs well with cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and cardamom.
